Where Nicky Hayen ranks in the shortest managerial reigns in Burnley history

Nicky Hayen lasted just 106 days as Burnley boss

Burnley aren’t a club known for their hire-and-fire attitude when it comes to managers, so Nicky Hayen’s sacking very much bucked the trend.

It left the Clarets rooted inside the Championship’s bottom three, after Hayen won just one of his 12 league games in charge.

His departure came just 106 days after his appointment in July, officially making his reign the shortest in the club’s history.

To illustrate just how brief his time in East Lancashire was, the Clarets spent almost as long - 71 days to be precise - in identifying Hayen as Scott Parker’s successor.

It’s a far cry from the days of John Haworth, Harry Potts, Sean Dyche, Stan Ternent et al.

Since their inception 144 years ago, Burnley have only employed 31 permanent managers, yet there’s still been one manager who oversaw fewer games than Hayen.

That accolade goes to one Martin Buchan, who took charge of just 13 games in 1985, one fewer than Hayen in league and cup.

But in terms of days in the job, he spent four more days in the hotseat than Hayen.

He won five of his 13 games in charge, drawing two and losing six, resigning after a heavy 4-0 defeat away to Chester.

Hayen, by comparison, won just one league game and a cup penalty shootout victory after being held to a draw in normal time.

Elsewhere, Billy Dougall spent just six months in the dugout during the 1957/58 campaign, while John Benson and Tommy Cavanagh lasted 270 and 272 days respectively.

Martin Dobson and Terry Pashley, who were only in joint-charge for three days in 2010 following the departure of Owen Coyle, doesn’t count towards this list as they were only caretaker bosses.

Shortest reigns (permanent managers only)

106 days - Nicky Hayen

110 days - Martin Buchan

215 days - Billy Dougall

270 days - John Benson

272 days - Tommy Cavanagh
