Nicky Hayen sacked as Burnley boss
Nicky Hayen has been sacked as Burnley boss following the disastrous start to the season.
The decision comes in the wake of this afternoon’s spineless 4-1 defeat to Lincoln City, which leaves the Clarets rooted inside the Championship’s bottom three.
Having taken the lead in the game, it means Burnley lost 18 points from winning positions under Hayen’s torrid tenure.
It was clear the former KRC Genk boss couldn’t continue, with angry Burnley fans chanting “you’re getting sacked in the morning” during a miserable afternoon at Sincil Bank.
Hayen didn’t even applaud the travelling Burnley fans at the final whistle, while it’s understood he also didn’t shake the hands of Lincoln’s coaching staff.
The Belgian, appointed just 106 days ago, won just one of his 12 games in charge, leaving the Clarets in 22nd place.
His only other victory came in the Carabao Cup against League One side Notts County, where they edged through on penalties.
The news was delivered in a biref 26-word statement on the club’s website.
“Burnley Football Club has dismissed head coach Nicky Hayen with immediate effect,” the statement read.
“The board has taken the decision following a disappointing start to the Championship season.”
There’s no details of a replacement or if anyone will be placed in interim charge.
The Clarets are back in action next Saturday, when they face Portsmouth at Turf Moor.
