Families 'thrive' at SEA LIFE Manchester with its mix of fun and learning
Aquarium offers chance to get up close to a variety of marine life, with everything from jellyfish and rays to turtles and sharks
A trip to an aquarium can be an educational experience, but SEA LIFE Manchester proves that learning about the underwater world can be just as much fun as it is fascinating.
Reporter Dominic Collis visited the attraction, near the Trafford Centre, with his partner and their two daughters, aged five and eight, to discover what was on offer for families.
The verdict? It was a day out that all four of us thoroughly enjoyed.
From the moment we arrived, the friendly staff helped make the experience welcoming and enjoyable. Their enthusiasm added to the visit, while the aquarium itself felt just the right size for a family attraction – big enough to offer plenty to see and discover, but not so enormous that younger visitors became overwhelmed.

That is an important consideration when taking children on a day out. There is plenty to capture their imagination, without feeling as though you need to rush from one exhibit to the next to fit everything in.
The aquarium offers the chance to get up close to a variety of marine life, with everything from jellyfish and rays to turtles and sharks providing opportunities to stop, look and learn.
For our two girls, it was an ideal combination of entertainment and education. There was plenty to keep them interested, while the exhibits offered a chance to discover more about the creatures living beneath the waves and the importance of looking after our oceans.
It is the sort of attraction that encourages children to ask questions and take an interest in the natural world, without making learning feel like a lesson.
While younger children will find plenty to enjoy, the experience is particularly well suited to primary school-age youngsters and above, who can appreciate the different species and take more from the educational side of the visit.
SEA LIFE Manchester is also adding a seasonal twist this autumn with its Ascarium: Tricks & Treats Halloween event.
Included with general admission, the family-friendly experience invites children to follow a themed activity trail, complete spooky challenges and learn more about marine life along the way.
Halloween characters, including Serafina the Sea Witch and a resident Warlock, are also set to appear on selected dates during weekends and October half term.
For families with older children looking for something a little more thrilling, SEA LIFE Manchester is hosting The Cursed Depths, an after-dark Halloween experience running from October 30 to November 1. Inspired by legends of the deep, it promises an immersive journey featuring mysterious tales, live characters and unexpected encounters.
Our visit was a reminder that a family day out does not have to involve a huge theme park or a packed schedule of activities to be memorable.
SEA LIFE Manchester strikes a good balance between being entertaining and informative, with friendly staff and an accessible layout helping to make the experience enjoyable for the whole family.
All four of us came away having had a great day, and it is an attraction I would recommend to families looking for something that combines a bit of adventure with the chance to learn something new.
Verdict: A fun, educational family day out, particularly well suited to primary school-age children and above. The manageable size, welcoming staff and fascinating marine life make it an enjoyable way to spend a few hours together.
