Bayern Munich release statement as ex-Burnley boss Vincent Kompany rushed to hospital
Vincent Kompany rushed to hospital after collapsing in training
Former Burnley boss Vincent Kompany has been rushed to hospital after collapsing at Bayern Munich’s training ground.
It happened as the 40-year-old watched Bayern’s second team in training and had to be taken to a hospital in Munich.
Kompany has been suffering with a viral infection for the past week.
“Vincent Kompany had to receive medical attention on Friday after collapsing during a training session of FC Bayern’s second team,” Bayern said in a statement.
“The first-team head coach had been watching the second team’s training session.
“Kompany is undergoing thorough examinations in hospital and will remain under medical supervision. Until further notice, his coaching staff will take charge of training and matchday operations.”
Kompany showed symptoms during Bayern’s 6-1 thrashing of RB Leipzig at the Allianz Arena last weekend and had to leave his post-match interviews to his assistants.
The former Manchester City defender missed Bayern’s training sessions on Monday to attend a check up.
On Tuesday, Kompany was able to oversee training before Bayern’s Champions League game with Arsenal. But he was again replaced by his number two Aaron Danks during the pre-match press conference.
After Wednesday night’s 2-2 draw in Bavaria, Kompany shared details of his condition.
“As a coach, you always want to do everything and do everything,” he explained.
“I got a pretty juicy virus last week, then of course I didn’t listen to my body and then the body eventually said: Now stop it!”
Kompany, who led the Clarets to the Championship title with 101 points during the 2022/23 season, left Turf Moor to join Bayern in May 2024.
“Vincent Kompany’s health is our top priority,” Bayern’s director of sport Max Eberl said.
“We at FC Bayern will do everything we can to ensure that he recovers quickly.
“Vinnie will receive all the necessary medical care and support, as well as all the time he needs.
“His coaching staff, whom we trust completely, will take over his duties. All of us at FC Bayern wish Vinnie a speedy recovery.”
