Cotterill, now in charge of League 1 Shrewsbury, was at the helm at Turf Moor from the summer of 2004 to November 2007, stabilising the club in the second tier and enjoying cup shocks against Aston Villa and Liverpool.

Cotterill's assistant Aaron Wilbraham said, on Cotterill's condition, ahead of Shrewsbury's delayed FA Cup third round tie at Southampton on Tuesday: "Steve has been in intensive care and it has been quite worrying.

"It has been an emotional weekend, but I have spoken to him in last couple of days, and he's starting to get better.

"He has been cracking a few jokes so I know he's improving. It's a relief."
