Nicky Hayen on Jamie Vardy's first Burnley goal and fitness concern

Nicky Hayen’s verdict on Jamie Vardy’s first Burnley goal

It was a trademark Jamie Vardy strike that got the 39-year-old up and running for Burnley against Wolves on Friday night.

The free agent signing ran onto a ball in behind and struck a powerful low shot across the goalkeeper and into the far corner to bag his first goal in Burnley colours on just his second start.

The former Leicester City man’s strike handed the Clarets a deserved lead, but it subsequently proved in vain as Nicky Hayen’s side conceded two poor efforts to lose 2-1 on the night.

As for Vardy, his night was cut short on the hour mark to be replaced by the returning Dastan Satpayev, with Hayen revealing the striker was nursing a slight problem.

“At half-time he already had pain in the glutes, so we tried to keep him going and then after 15 minutes, it was finished,” the Burnley boss said.

“But Jamie has his qualities and his intelligence. He knows how he has to press, when he has to run deep.

“The goal is actually an excellent goal from us. How we actually practised it in training is just a copy of what we did.

“But you have to be consistent for 95 minutes and even when you're losing a game, you have to keep the structure.

“It's positive that players want to change it and force it, but sometimes you do more harm for the team, especially when you don't run back and fans see that you don't have the effort anymore, don't put the effort for the team, for the club, then the atmosphere changes. This is something that I can understand.”
