Ex-Burnley boss Vincent Kompany discharged from hospital
Former Burnley boss Vincent Kompany has been discharged from hospital after his collapse at Bayern Munich’s training ground.
The 40-year-old had to be rushed to hospital last Friday after being taken ill as he watched Bayern’s second team.
The cause has been identified as meningeal irritation - an inflammation of the protective membrane surrounding the brain and spinal cord.
But, according to Bayern’s director of sport Max Eberl, the Belgian has now been discharged and is on the mend.
“Given the circumstances, he's doing well,” he told German broadcaster ARD on Wednesday.
“He was discharged from the hospital today. That is the biggest and best news for all of us.”
No timeline has been set for Kompany's return and Bayern said on Saturday that it would be a matter of "weeks, not days" until Kompany returned to the dugout.
His English assistant Aaron Danks has taken over in Kompany’s absence and oversaw a 3-1 win over Freiburg at the weekend.
Kompany had been nursing a virus in the days before his collapse and missed some team training sessions.
The ex-Clarets chief also missed a pre-match news conference prior to Bayern's Champions League game against Arsenal last Tuesday, but was subsequently on the touchline for the match the following night.
“As a coach, you always want to do everything and do everything,” Kompany explained after the Arsenal game.
“I got a pretty juicy virus last week, then of course I didn’t listen to my body and then the body eventually said: Now stop it!”
Bayern face Bundesliga title rivals Borussia Dortmund on Saturday, before a Champions League clash against Atletico Madrid on Tuesday.
