Burnley transfer state of play ahead of anticipated frantic deadline day

Burnley transfer state of play ahead of deadline day

All signs are pointing to a typically frantic end to Burnley’s summer transfer window.

While we’re unlikely to match the scenes witnessed two years ago during the start of Scott Parker’s tenure, where 18 players arrived and 21 moved on, it’s been another summer of squad churn at Turf Moor.

To date, seven new players have been signed, while a further 11 have departed following last season’s relegation from the Premier League.

But with the deadline closing at 11pm on Tuesday night, a day before Burnley’s home game against Middlesbrough, plenty of more ins and outs remain in the works.

Much of the summer has been dominated by talk of the will-he-won’t-he Zian Flemming transfer saga, which looks to be continuing right until the very end.

The latest is that Premier League side Ipswich Town have tabled a bid, reportedly of £17m. But as of yet there’s no clear suggestion if this has been accepted or not.

Reports in Suffolk also suggest Flemming is just one name being looked at by Portman Road chiefs, with a loan deal for Aston Villa’s Tammy Abraham also agreed.

Burnley boss Nicky Hayen has consistently spoken of his desire to keep Flemming at Turf Moor beyond Tuesday night’s deadline. But he’s also been open and honest with supporters that Flemming has a desire to play in the Premier League again and a move would be sanctioned if the club’s valuation was met.

Ligue 1 outfit Lille have previously been linked and their transfer kitty has recently been boosted by the £81m sale of midfielder Ayyoub Bouaddi to Manchester City. But it now appears they’re set to sign Feyenoord’s Ayase Ueda.

Previously, Brentford, Coventry City, Everton and Leeds United have all been credited with interest in Flemming, who still managed to impress in the top flight last season with 11 goals in 29 appearances.

On the incoming front, Sunderland’s Jocelin Ta Bi looks set to arrive to bolster Burnley’s options in the forward positions.

Leeds United’s Largie Ramazani, another winger, has also been strongly linked as Hayen looks to add more of a goal threat in the final third of the pitch.

The Clarets boss is also keen to bring in a new left-back, something that was already on the agenda prior to Bashir Humphreys’ recent knee injury, that is set to keep him out for a “few weeks”.

Harry Amass, of Manchester United, is one of several names to be linked, but it’s understood that won’t be happening. Coventry City’s Jake Bidwell and Igor Julio, a Brighton centre-back that can also play on the left, have also been mooted as potential targets.

A number six is another area of the pitch that Hayen wants to address, given the lack of balance in Burnley’s midfield.

But with club captain Josh Cullen due back around October time, it will be interesting to see how hard Burnley push to fill that role.

Speaking after Saturday’s horror show at Norwich, Hayen told the Burnley Express about his desire to bring in senior pros to guide the younger talent.

On the outgoing front, one of those senior names - Joe Worrall - is set to link up with Wrexham and has travelled to Wales today for his medical, for what is reported to be a £2m permanent move.

With the Clarets in need of trimming down their bloated squad, which - at this moment in stands, stands at 33 players - the likes of Shurandy Sambo, Hjalmar Ekdal, Lyle Foster, Andreas Hountondji and Michael Obafemi are all possible candidates to move on.
