Burnley FC capture top young Kiwi

The attacking midfielder becomes the Clarets’ fourth new addition to the youth-team ranks after helping the All Whites reach the last 16 of this summer’s under-17 World Cup finals in Mexico.

Dunedin-born Howieson comes from the Mosgiel club in New Zealand but holds a British passport courtesy of his Scottish father David.

The Clarets were alerted to Howieson by a connection in New Zealand of former Burnley full-back Ian Brennan and after making an approach the 16-year-old impressed during a trial spell last season.

“We are always looking and if there is a recommendation we will pursue it,” explained tin Dobson.

“We are trying to get talented young players in. Obviously the North West is a very competitive area and we are prepared to spread the net wide.

“Cameron came in at the end of last season and had a couple of training sessions with the youth team.

“We liked the look of him and wanted to take it further so offered him a scholarship.

“It’s a big decision for him and his family but he wants to play in English football.”

Howieson joins Jack Errington, Luke Conlan and Jason Gilchrist in joining the Clarets this summer as the new intake to the youth squad and will be eligible to play once international clearance is received.
