Burnley man charged after police chase ends with suspect jumping into Preston docks
His escape was thwarted when officers discovered him adrift in the chilly waters of the docks around midnight.
A Burnley man has been charged with driving offences after a police chase through Preston and the Fylde ended with a suspect jumping into the docks in an alleged attempt to escape officers.
Vincent Maughan, of Padgate Place, Burnley, has been charged with dangerous driving, driving while disqualified and driving without insurance.
The charges follow an incident on Tuesday night (October 13), when a driver allegedly failed to stop for police in the Watling Street Road area of Preston at around 11.19pm.
A pursuit lasting more than an hour followed, with police vehicles and the force helicopter involved as the chase continued through Preston and into the Fylde countryside.
The vehicle travelled through Kirkham and Wesham before returning towards Preston via Lea.
The driver eventually abandoned the vehicle in Pedders Lane and fled on foot towards the docks in Ashton.
A man was subsequently found in the water and pulled to safety by officers before being arrested.
Maughan has been bailed to appear at Preston Magistrates' Court on November 24.
A second man, aged 38 and from Preston, was also arrested in connection with the incident but has since been released with no further action.
