'Right to be angry': Burnley fans take aim at Alan Pace during Wolves defeat
Burnley fans take aim at Alan Pace during defeat to Wolves
Anger and frustration boiled over on the Turf Moor terraces on Friday night as Burnley’s poor start to the season continued with a defeat to Wolves.
Nicky Hayen’s side squandered the lead to lose 2-1, meaning by the next time they return to their home ground, an entire calendar year will have passed since their last home league win.
It prompted a furious response from fed-up Clarets fans, who focused their ire on Alan Pace, ALK Capital and the club’s board.
There were chants of “Alan Pace, get out of our club”, amongst others, while a “Pace out” banner was unfurled in the Cricket Field Stand.
It appeared stewards attempted to bring down the banner, while police officers also became involved. The Burnley Express has approached Lancashire Police to ask why this was the case.
There have also been concerns over the heavy-handed approach to body and bag searches on the turnstiles as supporters entered the ground, especially towards women and children.
It all points towards a growing toxic mood around the club, which doesn’t appear to be subsiding anytime soon.
The discontent was discussed by the pundits on Sky Sports, who televised Friday night’s clash with Wolves.
“And rightfully so,” Jobi McAnuff said of the angry fan response.
“I mean, you’re talking about a year not to win a game at home. Yes, some of that is Premier League football, but back at this level they have to find a way to get over the line.
“It just felt tonight, having played really well for half an hour, that as soon as they conceded that goal, the whole energy and life and belief drained out of that group of players and the fans inside the stadium.
“We spoke before the game about how that can affect you from a psychological point of view. They were really poor in the second half, really, really poor.
“These fans have a right to be angry, they’ve got a right to vent. They travel, they come here and it hasn’t been good enough.
“Contrast that with Wolves, who showed that intent to go and win the game and deservedly so in that second half.”
