The four-time Premier League winner answered questions on a range of topics as he addressed the media in an hour long session at the Arthur Bellamy Media Facility at Gawthorpe.
Here are the stand-out quotes from the former Belgium international, who will be hoping to steer the Clarets to success in the Championship next season.
5. TAKING A RISK
"It was a conscious choice, when you get into these transitions of ownership – that’s why I stay calm, I don’t want to make big statements. It’s really a very delicate and dangerous period of time when you’ve got these transitions. "You can fall very far down or go very quickly back up. But the difference between left and right is massive, just small details. Obviously my previous job I ended up the wrong side of it, we’d already gone too far down the wrong path. "And I can see it cripples the club – there’s nothing you can do, you want to get players you can’t but you have to sell players. That’s why I rated the job I did at Anderlecht as I did – a fantastic job. The advantage we have right now is we are on the brink, that’s why I came here to turn a corner, then it becomes a very healthy club again." Photo: Nathan Stirk
6. BACKROOM STAFF
"He [Craig Bellamy] is one of the rumours that were actually correct….After the pics got out. "He’s someone I have huge respect for – he’s incredibly gifted and he’s a typical misunderstood guy who gives so much, if I can have him with me, I will. Just give me three or four days to make sure. "I’ve learned until the i’s are dotted and the t’s are crossed… "Bear with me on this one, it will be soon enough, but we’re very happy with how we are going to be able to bring in staff to work with the staff that is already here.” Photo: JOHN THYS
7. STYLE OF PLAY
"It's a long-term aim. You start it off with trying to blend it into making sure the team is still able to get results, but it's something that won't go away. There's not one decision or move we'll make that won't go in that direction. "It might take a bit of time, but everything we're doing is to arrive there. That won't deviate at any point. It won't be a desperate move to arrive there, it'll be a progressive move, and it doesn't have to be perfect right now. It won't happen overnight, hence why it is a long-term commitment." 8. PEP GUARDIOLA
“I’ll say it once and be honest, my beginnings – I met this fantastic coach, the best in the world. "And the simple thing I took from him, not a style of football, I didn’t take a style of football from Pep. "It’s that he was the very best at telling his players why they were doing things on the pitch – anything you do, why you passing it in a certain way, why you’re defending in a certain way. "And that’s it, if I take something to Burnley, in no way whatsoever anything to do with the demands he can put on his players – it’s a completely different team – but what I take as a coach, always to be able to tell my players why they are doing something."
