Norwich City boss backs Nicky Hayen to be a success with Burnley despite slow start

Phillipe Clement backs Nicky Hayen to be a success with Burnley

Norwich City boss Phillipe Clement has backed his countryman Nicky Hayen to be a success with Burnley, as long as he’s given time.

It comes after the Canaries strolled to a 4-1 win at Carrow Road on Saturday, to condemn the Clarets to a second successive league defeat to continue their slow start to the season.

It’s been a far from ideal start for Hayen, who has yet to taste victory in his first five games in league and cup.

Sitting inside the bottom three on just one point, Burnley were also knocked out of the Carabao Cup on penalties by League One Bradford City last week.

Hayen’s side endured a nightmare start against Norwich, going two goals down inside five minutes and three with just 21 on the clock.

After capitalising on some horrendous defending from the visitors, Clement was delighted to claim Norwich’s first points of the season.

“This was a more efficient day, for sure,” the Belgian said. “In the first half, second half not.

“You make the difference in the first minutes of the game and like this, you create an amazing atmosphere in the stadium and a lot of confidence in the team and you create doubts with your opponents also.

“So a lot of positive things in the way the team played with the ball, how brave we were against their pressing to break open their defensive line also and to score in the right moment.

“The way the boys moved, the way they found spaces against a good opponent, with a good manager also, with a lot of experience, with a lot of players who played in the Premier League last season. So no, it's a really positive day for the club.

“They had possession, but possession without big chances and they try to lure you out also, out of position with their possession.

“So, of course, sometimes there's an advantage also to know the manager on the other side, to know what he wants and you see he's just in the building also, so he will need time to build things.

“But he has a good philosophy, he did really good things in [Club] Brugge and in Genk, so I'm sure that Burnley will also become better. But we also used the right moments and the right space.”
