Nicky Hayen vows Burnley will be 'really good team' after international break

Nicky Hayen reiterates call for patience

Nicky Hayen has pledged that Burnley will be a “really good team” after the upcoming international break.

It follows a poor start to the season, which has left the Clarets winless after their first six league games.

Burnley, who actually remain without a victory of any kind in 90 minutes since February, currently find themselves second from bottom in the Championship table.

But with players expected to return back from injury and with his new signings given more time to gel, Hayen believes the three-week international break - coming off the back of next week’s home game against Derby County - will have a major influence.

“When I arrived in the United States, I had a completely different team, almost a different team, than we have now,” he said ahead of today’s trip to Swansea City.

“At the end of the transfer window, we did signings. At the start of September, you have half of a new team, and of course you trained in the US on structure and on principles, but suddenly these players are gone and you have to do it with new players.

“I can tell you, in our squad this season, we have 17 players who had 17 different managers last season. So 17 times different structures, 17 times different principles, and this is what we're now bringing together, trying to create a team with all these players.

“And of course it needs time, and I really dislike it, because I know how it goes in football, but you see that we're creating a new team, a new environment, and there's a confidence that we will have, after that international break, we will be a really good team, but we just have to survive until then.”

It comes as Burnley prepare to take on a Swansea side this afternoon that sit third in the Championship table after an impressive start to the season.

They did, however, suffer their first league defeat in midweek, going down to a 3-1 reversal at Southampton.

“One loss doesn't mean that everything is going to change for them,” Hayen warned.

“So they're really comfortable on the ball, they play really good football, create a lot of chances, so it's one of the better teams so far in the league and we're aware.

“But okay, this is also maybe a team that suits us. They want to play football, we want to play football, and we just have to be in the best shape.

“What I said, if we already can have the level from the Wrexham game, we will end up far.”
