'Brick wall': Jamie Vardy makes Burnley vow after recent free agent arrival

Jamie Vardy makes clear Burnley vow after free agent arrival

Jamie Vardy has vowed to run himself into a brick wall for Burnley following his recent free transfer signing.

The 39-year-old is available to make his Clarets debut at Swansea City this weekend after last week’s arrival on a one-year deal.

The Premier League winner was suspended for the midweek trip to Wrexham, carrying over a suspension from last season in Italy.

While he might not start at Swansea this weekend, with Burnley boss Nicky Hayen wary of throwing him in too soon due to his lack of a pre-season, Vardy has promised he’ll give everything he’s got once he does take to the pitch in Burnley colours.

“I'm absolutely buzzing for it [Swansea],” he told Burnley’s YouTube channel.

“Obviously, it comes down to the manager and what teams he picks, but whatever I'm asked to do, I'll just make sure that I'm 100 per cent ready.

“Literally, I can't wait to get going and just that I will fully give 100 per cent, even if that's me running myself into a brick wall.”

Despite turning 40 in January, Vardy insists his drive to succeed is as high as it’s ever been.

“It's hunger,” the striker added. “I'm doing something that I love doing. I love playing football.

“I've always said that when my legs tell me that that's enough, then I'm not stupid, I'll stop there and then.

“But I've kept myself fit, I look after myself, legs are still good, so I'll be giving everything I can to make sure that we get the results come matchday.”

Vardy arrived as a free agent last Sunday, just a few days after Zian Flemming left Turf Moor to join Ipswich Town on transfer deadline day.

While it might have looked like a last minute deal, the former Leicester City frontman admits the move had been in the works longer than people might have imagined.

“The conversations were good,” he said.

“This summer, I wanted to spend a bit of time with the family. We don't really get a chance to do that over summer, so I left it as long as possible, kept myself ticking over, as I always do, knowing that I still wanted to play.

“I found out that Burnley were interested, got the phone call, Zoom calls, so it wasn't something that just happened overnight, it was all planned.”
