Burnley announce surprise signing of free agent Jamie Vardy

Burnley have announced the surprise signing of former Premier League winner Jamie Vardy.

The 39-year-old, a free agent since leaving Serie A side Cremonese at the end of last season, has penned a one-year deal.

He provides some much-needed bolstering to the striker department following last week’s deadline day departure of Zian Flemming to Ipswich Town.

“I’m really happy to now be here at Burnley,” he said of his move to Turf Moor.

"This club has a proper footballing history and passionate fans who deserve a team that represents them and their town.

"I can’t wait to get going on the pitch and help the team move in the right direction.”

Vardy is someone that needs no introduction, having helped fire Leicester City to an unprecedented Premier League title against all the odds during the 2015/16 season.

The striker scored an incredible 200 goals for the Foxes over a 13-year spell, having joined from then non-league side Fleetwood Town in 2012.

Vardy, who has scored seven times in 26 appearances for England, scored seven times in Italy last season.

Having started his career with Stocksbridge Park Steels, Vardy also enjoyed a prolific spell with Halifax Town before his move to Fleetwood.

Burnley will now be hoping he’s the exact tonic they need to turn things around after a nightmare start to the season, which sees them sit bottom of the Championship table with no wins to their name.

“We are delighted to welcome Jamie to Burnley,” Clarets boss Nicky Hayen said.

“His experience and leadership will be invaluable to our squad and we believe he can make a significant impact on our campaign.

“Jamie has a proven track record and we are looking forward to seeing him in a Claret shirt."
