'I keep backing them' - Big prediction made for Burnley's crucial home tie vs Newcastle United

Chris Sutton has made his prediction for Burnley vs Newcastle United in the Premier League.

Chris Sutton has made his prediction for Burnley’s clash at home to Newcastle United on Tuesday, and it doesn’t make for great reading for the Clarets.

Scott Parker’s men host the Magpies at Turf Moor off the back of consecutive draws against Bournemouth and Everton. However, those results only served to end a seven-game losing streak, meaning Burnley are now without a win in their last nine outings. That’s seen Burnley slip to 19th in the Premier League table, six points from safety ahead of Tuesday’s fixtures.

Chris Sutton’s Burnley vs Newcastle United prediction

Newcastle don’t exactly head to Turf Moor in great form themselves, with their 1-0 defeat to Manchester United on Boxing Day leaving Eddie Howe’s side with just one win in their last five Premier League matches, slipping to 14th in the table. However, former Blackburn Rovers and Celtic striker Sutton has still backed Newcastle to pick up a narrow win over Burnley - even if he does think the Clarets will run the EFL Cup holders close.

“Burnley have drawn their past two games, but they really need a win because they are a little adrift at the bottom, six points from safety,” Sutton wrote in his Premier League predictions column for BBC Sport. “Scott Parker is under a bit of pressure, and a few of their fans have called up 606, saying they want a change. I still think they have been competitive, though, even if they have not beaten anyone since 26 October.”

Forecasting a 1-0 win for the visitors, Sutton continued: “Newcastle could do with a victory as well, though. They are a strange side because they have been playing quite well but not really getting results. I keep backing them to win, so it is costing me too. “I am not going to stop, though. I am going for a rare away win for Eddie Howe's side - and this time they will keep a clean sheet.”

What next for Burnley in relegation battle?

Burnley supporters will be desperately hoping that Sutton is wrong. Should his prediction come to fruition, the Clarets will have taken just two points from their last 10 Premier League games. A defeat to Newcastle is a result they can ill afford, especially at home, with Burnley kicking off 2026 away at Brighton and Liverpool, alongside a clash against Man Utd at Turf Moor and an FA Cup tie against Millwall.

After Anfield, Burnley host Tottenham Hotspur in what is an incredibly tough January run that could either reignite their season or put another nail in their relegation coffin.
