Burnley boss Nicky Hayen reveals ‘clear conversations’ with cult hero Ashley Barnes

Nicky Hayen reveals ‘clear conversations’ with Clarets hero Ashley Barnes

Nicky Hayen has revealed he’s had “clear conversations” with Burnley fan favourite Ashley Barnes in recent days.

The striker is now officially a free agent after his contract with the Clarets expired at the end of June.

In the club’s retained list, Burnley confirmed they remained in discussions with the 36-year-old, who began undertaking his coaching badges alongside Kyle Walker last season.

It’s been mooted that a potential player-coach could be in the offing, but as of yet no agreement has been reached.

Hayen, sitting down for his first interview with the local media earlier today, was asked about Barnes’ future amid the ongoing silence.

“We had a clear conversation the last few days,” he revealed.

“So okay, I know Barnes, he is a legend of the club also. I respect him a lot, so he can be part of the team, but we made some clear roles for him and he has to think about if it suits him or not.

“So if it suits, perfect. If it doesn't suit and he wants to be a player who wants to continue for one year, then that's his decision.”

When asked if his role would be on-field, as opposed to a coaching position, Hayen replied: “[It] can also be both.”

Barnes made just 11 appearances last season, mostly in the cup competitions, as the Clarets struggled in the Premier League.

He appeared to be saying his goodbyes after making a late substitute appearance during the final day 1-1 draw with Wolves.

He remains a cult hero among supporters, making more than 300 appearances for the club, largely in the top flight, scoring 57 goals.

Axel Tuanzebe is also a free agent after his contract ended at the end of last season, while Martin Dubravka and Vaclav Hladky both departed at the end of their respective deals.
