Colne school where Titanic bandleader Wallace Hartley studied transformed into 14 apartments
Titanic band leader’s former school trandformed into apartments
A historic Colne school once attended by Titanic bandleader Wallace Hartley has been transformed into 14 apartments, with tenants now being offered the chance to live in a building steeped in the town's history.
The former Wesleyan School on Great George Street, which dates back to 1852, has been converted into a residential development named Wallace Hartley House, with apartments now available to rent from £600 per calendar month.
Hartley, one of Colne's most famous sons, attended the school before going on to become a violinist and bandleader aboard the RMS Titanic.
He became an enduring figure in the story of the disaster after leading the ship's eight-member band as they continued playing music while the vessel sank during its maiden voyage on April 15, 1912.
More than a century later, the building where he received his education has been given a new lease of life, having previously operated as an underused business centre.
The conversion, undertaken by a local developer, has created 14 apartments combining the building's historic character with modern accommodation.
Property Shop has been appointed as the leading agent to market the properties, which feature open-plan living spaces, contemporary interiors and high-quality finishes.

The development is centrally located, with Colne's shops, amenities and attractions within easy reach.
The former school also has other notable historical connections. It was one of the most prominent British Society Schools, while Colne-born scientist Edmondson Spencer was among its other former pupils.
Steven Chippendale, managing director of Property Shop, said: "We're absolutely delighted to be involved in bringing these fantastic apartments to the rental market.
"The quality of the accommodation is exceptional, but what makes this development particularly special is the incredible history behind it.
"Knowing that Wallace Hartley, who became such a famous part of the Titanic story, actually went to school in this very building is fascinating. It's a wonderful opportunity for people to enjoy modern living in a place with such a unique connection to Colne's past."
Coun. Nadeem Ahmed, Mayor of Pendle, said: "I am absolutely delighted that this building has been given a new lease of life, it's an amazing building with fantastic facilities here in Colne.
"The history regarding this building is also incredible with the Titanic bandleader Wallace Hartley once going to school here."
The 14 apartments are now available to rent through Property Shop, with prices starting at £600 per calendar month.
