Burnley's St Matthew's Church transformed with poppy display by crafting group for Remembrance Sunday

The poppies were made by members of the 'Coffee, Craft and Chat' group at St Matthew's Church, who meet on Friday mornings to knit, crochet and felt.

The talented members of a crafting group have transformed a Burnley church with a dazzling display of 1,500 hand-made poppies.

Members of the ‘Coffee, Craft and Chat’ group at St Matthew’s Church got to work knitting, crocheting and felting to make the poppies that have formed a moving display for Remembrance Sunday.

The group, which meets on Friday mornings, was formed six months ago by lifelong friends Wendy Pound and Cath Young. Wendy successfully applied for a community grant to make her vision for the poppy displays come to life.

Wendy said: “We are an eclectic group with people of all ages and we come together for knitting, crocheting, felting and also colouring and mindfulness. People can also come along just for a brew and chat.

“This project has very much been a joint effort to make it all come to life.”

The group has been personally thanked for the display by Fr Alex Frost who said this was something he had always wanted for his church.

A team of volunteers, put together by member Angela Robertson, have also been selling poppies at Burnley’s Tesco store this year.
