East Lancashire firms lead the way as more than 100 digital champions trained
Manufacturers in Burnley, Nelson and Clitheroe are helping to lead a growing digital transformation across Lancashire after taking part in a Government-backed training programme designed to boost productivity and innovation.
New figures from Made Smarter North West show more than 100 employees from manufacturing firms across the region have now completed its Leading Change for Digital Champions programme, with several East Lancashire businesses investing in developing digital skills within their workforces.
Nelson lift manufacturer Arc Elevators and Clitheroe firm N & J Aluminium Linings are among a handful of companies to have trained two or more Digital Champions since the programme launched in 2023, demonstrating a long-term commitment to embedding digital expertise across their businesses.
Meanwhile, Burnley bed manufacturer Sweet Dreams has also embraced the initiative, with Production Support Supervisor Waqar Ahmed completing the latest programme.

Waqar said: “One of the biggest benefits was seeing best practice in action during the Amazon visit. It was impressive to see how technology, processes and people worked together to create such an efficient operation.
“Seeing a smart factory environment first-hand helped me think differently about some of the opportunities within our own business. It showed how digital tools can improve communication, reduce administration and give people better access to information when they need it.
“We've already started introducing new systems, but the programme has given us fresh ideas and renewed momentum to continue that journey. It has encouraged us to look more closely at our processes and identify where digital technologies could help improve efficiency, visibility and the flow of information across the business.
“Once you start looking at thingsPolice issue appeal following car crash on A59 at Horton near Gisburn through that lens, you realise there are lots of opportunities to make small improvements that can have a big impact.”
Since 2023, Made Smarter North West has trained 106 employees from 73 manufacturing businesses through 12 cohorts of the programme. Around one in three participating manufacturers has now enrolled more than one member of staff, reflecting a growing investment in digital skills.
The programme equips employees with practical tools to help lead digital change through workshops, coaching sessions and a visit to Amazon's fulfilment centre. Graduates also join a Digital Champions Network, enabling them to share ideas and best practice with manufacturers from across the North West.
