Much has been made from outside observers about Kompany’s stubbornness in sticking to the approach that worked so well in the Championship last season.

When asked if another defeat might change that, the Burnley boss said: “The change is always incremental change, so you always learn and you always find a way to make it work.

“But that’s not related to just losing or winning, it’s a habit you need to have and a discipline.

“At this moment in time making too much of a distinction between us and the teams we’re competing with, I’m not naive enough to drive myself into something like this.

“At the moment okay we have tough games, tough results, but it’s a long league and it’s for us to pick ourselves up before the rest of the teams.”

What is most worrying for Clarets fans is that the team is struggling to even stay in games at this moment in time.

Kompany’s men have shipped three or more goals on five occasions already this season from their opening nine games.

When asked what his side needs to do to be more competitive, Kompany said: “At the moment the first thing revolves around the basics again.

“We haven’t done what we did last year because of what people would call the most obvious, because we were good at the basics, second balls, duels, the scrap and the fight of it.

“Still in games, yes we’ve faced strong opposition, but in games we’ve shown that this season, but it’s a 90, 95 or 100 minutes of that what you need. Coming out in the second-half and showing it then, that’s not a recipe that is viable at this level. It has to be all of the time.

“In these moments you have to realise it.”
