Striker Austin back in fold at Turf

Austin’s £4.5m switch to Hul City fell through on Monday night after failing a medical due to a knee problem.

Austin was determined to bounce back as Burnley started their-pre-season preparations at Morecambe on Tuesday night, but Dyche gave him time off with his family, and, instead, yesterday he travelled to Cork with the squad ahead of Monday’s game with Cork City.

Dyche said: “Charlie wanted to get on with it at Morecambe, but it was my decision to say ‘no, let it settle for 24 hours and then go to Ireland with us’. We just carry on as normal - the club have made it clear, it’s not been a position where we wanted to sell him, there were people looking at him, to buy him, and that’s still the case. He comes back into the fold. Obviously it’s a strange situation for the lad, wanting to get a chance to play in the Premier League – at the moment that one’s not going to go through, but he’s always made it clear how much he enjoys his time here with us, so we carry on as normal.”

Hull boss Steve Bruce revealed Austin’s knee was the reason for the deal falling through, and Dyche added: “It’s a strange one with his knee - we’ve all seen how many games he’s played over the last four years. You look at it and he keeps playing and scoring, but all parties have to be happy in any deal, particularly when there’s big sums of money involved.

“Everyone has their right to deal with things as they see fit, and Steve Bruce is certainly a wise, experienced man, and they have to say whatever they’re thinking - that’s their prerogative.

“We know the lad and what he does, and I’ve never had a problem with his fitness other than a hamstring.”
