In a tight fixture with chances at a premium it was the Clarets who emerged victorious with their first victory at Portman Road since January 1970 when a solitary Frank Casper goal was the difference between the two teams.

Ipswich edged a cagey first half, which didn’t burst into life until the dying seconds, with Town midfielder Skuse heavily involved in both attempts.

Trippier was the initial hero, blocking on the line as Skuse found time and space in the box to turn and shoot, but the ever present defender was alert enough to get his body in the way and clear the danger.

Moments later Skuse again could have given The Tractor Boys the lead, but after picking the ball up in the middle of the park, his long range drive was just wide of Heaton’s post, with the Clarets stopper well beaten.

Shackell was next to come to the rescue after the break, he misjudged the initial ball through which allowed Murphy to break free, but somehow he managed to get back to block just as Murphy was about to pull the trigger.

Anderson was next to test the Clarets resolve again shooting from distance, but like Skuse he wasn’t able to find the target, Heaton was happy to watch the ball fly wide of his goal.

As the game looked like it was headed towards the first 0-0 draw at Portman Road since Bristol City visited in February 2010, Scott Arfield headed in his fourth Burnley goal.

David Jones smartly headed a loose ball wide to Trippier, who lofted in a delightful ball to Arfield who guided his header past helpless Town keeper Scott Loach.

With time ticking away, the impressive Shackell timed a last ditch tackle on Jay Tabb to perfection, with the midfielder shaping to cross.

The win sees the Clarets stretch their lead at the top of the Championship to two points after Millwall pegged back next weeks vistors to Turf Moor QPR in a 2-2 draw at the New Den.
