Burnley were a goal down after just six minutes when Riyad Mahrez tucked the ball past debutant Bailey Peacock-Farrell.
The Algerian international netted his second of the afternoon at the midway point of the first half before Benjamin Mendy added a third when converting Kevin De Bruyne's cross just before the break.
Ferran Torres finished from close range to make it 4-0 in the 66th minute and Mahrez went on to complete his hat-trick when heading home substitute Phil Foden's delivery three minutes later.
1. Bailey Peacock-Farrell 5
It was a real baptism of fire for the Northern Ireland international. Conceded five on his debut and City had another two chalked off. Not really to blame for any of City's strikes and kicking was a positive.
2. Matt Lowton 3
Caught out of position far too many times as City attacked with purpose and precision. Slow to close down Torres for the fourth and missing in action as Foden set up City's fifth.
3. James Tarkowski 4
The error leading up to City's opener set the tone for the rest of his and Burnley's afternoon. Gave possession to Rodri far too cheaply and City capitalised. Not at the races for much of the afternoon as the home side coasted to victory.
4. Ben Mee 4
The defensive line was far too deep and invited pressure from City, which they capitalised on. On his heels when Mahrez got in behind from a throw in for City's second and couldn't get close to the Algerian forward for his third.
