Jutkiewicz disappointed with defeat but looking at bigger picture

Lukas Jutkiewicz netted his second goal in as many pre-season friendlies at Accrington on Saturday, but admitted the 4-2 defeat was a blow to Burnley’s professional pride.

Jutkiewicz scored from the spot at the Store First Stadium after being brought down by Tom Davies, having been on target in the 2-1 win over Etoile Carouge in Geneva last Friday.

But the Clarets were already 3-0 down to their League 2 neighbours by that stage, and despite a debut strike from Jelle Vossen to make it 3-2, Stanley went on to add a late fourth.

Jutkiewicz said: “Obviously no one likes to lose games as professionals, you pride yourself on that, so that’s a disappointing aspect, but it’s all about game time.

“It’s our first proper competitive match and the most important thing is getting fitness into your legs and that’s the aim of pre-season for us.”

Burnley conceded three goals in the opening nine minutes, and Jutkiewicz added: “We didn’t know what has hit us after a few minutes, every shot they had went in, so we had to pick ourselves up.

“We were a bit shell shocked, but after that I thought we controlled the rest of the first half and managed to pull a couple of goals back.

“But like I say, the most important thing is about getting fitness into our legs - as you can see, the lads were doing extra running after the game as well, it’s all designed to get us in the best possible condition for Leeds.”
