And the England Under 21 international has his sights set on a full call-up in the long term.

Only former Claret Charlie Austin, West Brom’s Saido Berahino, Harry Kane of Spurs and Manchester United and England captain Wayne Rooney have more Premier League goals, and Ings said: “I’m only 22, there’s a lot of development to be made, and there’s a lot of top strikers.

“Charlie is a good friend of mine and he’s done fantastic, he’ll score at any level, I’d be very surprised if he doesn’t get the call for the next squad.

“And Saido and Harry are a pleasure to work with.

“It’s promising for English football, but for me and my chances, if an opportunity ever comes up, I plan on taking it with both hands.

“It’s not about getting a call up, it’s about getting that and maintaining it and staying in there, that’s what I’m aiming for.”

Ings has seven goals to his name so far, and feels he is acclimatising well to the top flight: “At first I didn’t know what to expect.

“I watch a lot of Premier League football but hadn’t experienced it for myself.

“Learning from other strikers, you pick up different movements and what’s required.

“I think I’m growing in the Premier League, every week I look more comfortable.

“There are a lot less chances in the Premier League so it’s important you take them.”
