Chesterfield 3, Burnley 2

Dyche, who made more than 250 appearances for Chesterfield in a seven-and-a-half year spell at Saltergate, netted from the penalty spot in a 3-3 draw against Boro in the semi-final at Old Trafford.

But the Spireites, then plying their trade in the old Division Two, were then beaten 3-0 in the replay at Hillsborough as Mikkel Beck, Fabrizio Ravanelli and Emerson scored.

The fixture, held at the Proact Stadium, had only entered its 11th minute when Lukas Jutkiewicz threatened to add to his pre-season tally.

The former Boro striker, who netted six times in Burnley’s preparation for the Premier League last term, brought down Michael Duff’s raking diagonal pass on his chest before the fingertips of goalkeeper Tommy Lee forced his volley on to the underside of the bar. Veteran defender Ian Evatt then hacked clear under pressure from Scott Arfield as the effort dropped on the line.

However, it took just three minutes for Jutkiewicz to add to his goal in the 4-2 defeat to Accrington Stanley at the Crown Ground.

A sweeping move from the visitors, involving Arfield and Frederic Ulvestad, resulted in the 26-year-old striker getting ahead of his marker to touch home summer signing Matt Lowton’s near post delivery.

The Clarets, fresh from victories over Rangers and St Mirren midweek, continued to apply the pressure, targeting Spireites full back Daniel Jones’s left hand side.

This time Lowton, who did well to win the ball off Evatt at the bye-line, pulled the ball back for Kightly, who had his effort blocked, before George Boyd’s drilled attempt was nonchalantly controlled on the line by Tendayi Darikwa.

But Boyd wasn’t to be denied. Midway through the half the Clarets capitalised on Chesterfield’s high defensive line, which was exploited wonderfully by Ulvestad’s perfectly timed incisive pass, and Boyd beat the offside trap before rounding Lee and tapping in to an empty net to make it 2-0.

The home side, managed by former Wales international Dean Saunders, pulled a goal back in the 25th minute when Jake Orrell guided Darikwa’s pass in to the corner from the edge of the six yard box, sparking a resurgence from the hosts.

Evatt’s miss, though, when scooping over the bar after his header from a corner was blocked, was the only attempt the home side could manufacture.

The Clarets almost extended their advantage in the final minute of the opening half, but a superb double stop from Lee denied Jutkiewicz and Lowton.

Saunders rang the changes after the break and the hosts prospered from the transformation.

Once Jones had curled over the bar from a well worked corner routine, substitute Armand Gnanduillet levelled in spectacular fashion when his gloriously acrobatic attempt flashed across Tom Heaton and cannoned in off the upright.

Spireites skipper Samy Morsy fizzed an effort just wide of the far post from 25 yards with a quarter-of-an-hour of the game remaining as the hosts searched for the lead.

At the other end, from an almost impossible angle, Lowton tried to squirm an effort inside the near post, but Lee clawed the ball off the line as Jutkiewicz attempt to bundle the rebound in to the net. Without the presence of goal-line technology, referee James Adcock gave the Chesterfield stopper the benefit of the doubt on this occasion.

The second half, however, belonged to the hosts as they continued to assert their dominance. Armand beat Lowton with ease, crossed to fellow sub Mani Dieseruvwe and his strike was deflected inches wide of the upright by team-mate Byron Harrison.

Chesterfield did eventually grab the winner - in the 89th minute. Armand was the architect once more as he beat his marker, made space, and slipped the ball in to the corner as Harrison provided the distraction.

Former Clarets Graham Alexander and Steve Davis will now welcome Dyche’s men to Highbury on Tuesday evening when Burnley take on Fleetwood Town, kick-off 7-45 p.m.
