Opinion: Burnley's relegation still hurts despite long being inevitable

The Clarets boss has come under increasing pressure this season after overseeing a hugely disappointing campaign in the top flight.

With four games still remaining, Burnley’s fate was finally sealed following last night’s 1-0 defeat to Manchester City – meaning they’ve now won just four of their 34 fixtures to date.

Despite a miserable run which has seen them win just one of their last 25 league games, the club has so far opted to stick by their manager.

But the Burnley Express understands Parker’s role will now come under the microscope now relegation has been officially confirmed.

As for Parker, he remained non-committal when asked about his future following last night’s defeat.

"I've been really consistent,” he said.

"In terms of the sacrifice and the work that my sole focus is this young group and trying to develop these young men, trying to guide them, trying to use my experiences to make them better, and I honestly think I've done that.

"But that's exactly it and I feel like this group are exactly that, and that's my main focus and that will continue to be it.

"Of course, we'll reflect. We'll work out where we've gone wrong. Some of those things are out of our control, and some of those things are down to what we can do and what we can't do. That's just the club we've been. But yeah, we've fallen a little bit short.

“There's always a lot of adversity and a lot of challenges and they come thick and fast in what we do. But we'll regroup and we'll be better for that.”

When asked if he wants to be the man to lead Burnley back to the Premier League, Parker added: “I think at this present moment in time, I'm hurting and I'm disappointed and I'm sad for the owners. I'm sad for the players. That's just where I am really at this present moment in time.

“Of course, we'll sit down as a group and we'll sit down with everyone.

"I've got an incredible relationship with everyone in terms of owners and we'll sit down and work out what the best way to go as a football club is to keep moving in the right direction and make us better.”
