The Clarets swapped places with Everton — who were due to face Liverpool at Anfield in the Merseyside derby — as Matej Vydra’s second half finish proved decisive.
The Czech striker was Mike Jackson’s only change from the midweek successive over Southampton due to Maxwel Cornet’s absence through injury.
And the 29-year-old, who hadn’t found the net since his equaliser against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, proved his worth when guiding Wout Weghorst’s pass past Jose Sa just after the hour.
Here are the ratings.

9. Jack Cork 8.5
Excellent in the middle of the park. Some of his work will go under the radar, but he's been a vital component in Burnley's midfield in the last few fixtures. Works hard, uncomplicated on the ball, keeps everything ticking, and didn't give playmakers such as Joao Moutinho any time to influence proceedings. 10. Matej Vydra 8
Back in the side and showed his worth when hitting the winner in the second half. The Czech striker proved to be the hero of the hour with a very tidy finish, which ultimately lifted the Clarets out of the bottom three. His work rate, at times, is unrivalled, he tracks back, makes a nuisance of himself and does everything he can to prevent the opposition from getting the ball out from the back. Deserved his standing ovation when substituted. (Photo by Stu Forster/Getty Images) Photo: Stu Forster

11. Wout Weghorst 8
Didn't really see anything break for him in front of goal, aside from a botched effort from 25 yards out and an attempt that was blocked by Boly inside the penalty area. However, the Dutchman was integral to Burnley's success in the final third, both offensively and defensively, when pressurising the ball. Put in a real shift, dropped deep to link play and showed great awareness and composure to pull the ball back for Vydra's winner. (Photo by Gareth Copley/Getty Images) Photo: Gareth Copley

12. Ashley Barnes 7
More than played his part when coming on for the final half-hour. Held the ball up impeccably well, provided a physical threat and had a goal ruled out. Sensibly took the ball into the corner as the seconds ticked down, despite space opening up ahead of him. (Photo by Stu Forster/Getty Images) Photo: Stu Forster
