The Clarets struggled to create any clear-cut chances of note as they were frustrated by a stubborn and well organised PNE outfit.
By comparison, Preston had two or three good openings in a first-half where they were by far the better team, but failed to capitalise on a sloppy and tetchy Burnley display.
The second-half was a non-event in terms of action at both ends of the pitch, but tempers briefly flared when referee Gavin Ward let things boil over, subsequently handing out numerous cards when the game didn’t really merit it.
Here’s how Burnley’s players rated:

5. Lucas Pires - 6/10
Picked out Jaidon Anthony’s run with a clever through ball in the first-half, but also produced some stray passes. Photo: Kelvin Lister-Stuttard

6. Josh Cullen - 6/10
A fairly typical Cullen display. All very neat and tidy but perhaps guilty of one too many sidewards passes. Photo: Kelvin Lister-Stuttard

7. Josh Brownhill - 6/10
Guilty of a few sloppy passes, but often the only man looking to break forward through the middle and get beyond Lyle Foster. Photo: Kelvin Lister-Stuttard

8. Hannibal - 7/10
Surprised he was taken off as he was the man winning the ball back and beating the press with clever turns. At least added something different. Photo: Kelvin Lister-Stuttard
