However, midfielder Chris McCann is expected to leave the club - on the back of the departures of goalkeepers Lee Grant and Brian Jensen.

It was thought Paterson would also depart the club, five years after a £1.2m move from Scunthorpe United, with no formal offer on the table going into the final game of the season against Ipswich, in which he scored his eighth goal of the season.

But talks have been scheduled for next week, with the club showing a willingness to re-sign the 25-year-old.

Manager Sean Dyche had said on Saturday: “We’ve been talking with Pato. Every player has a different situation – they all have an individual situation.

“The chat we have with these players is ongoing and some work slightly quicker than others just because of the acceptance or the buy-in from all parties to make sure it gets over the line.

“He’s one that we have been talking to and we will be talking to.

“I know where it’s going.”

However, McCann’s demands are believed to outweight what the club are willing to offer. Celtic and Norwich are monitoring his situation.
