Police clarify their involvement in fan banner ‘altercation’
Lancashire Police have clarified their involvement in the confrontation that occurred with a Burnley fan that unfurled a banner inside Turf Moor.
During the second half of Friday night’s 2-1 defeat to Wolves, a Clarets supporter housed in the Cricket Field Stand held up a large white sheet with the words “Pace Out” written on it.
This was in reference to Burnley chairman Alan Pace, who was also the subject of “get out of our club” chants from home supporters.
It comes in response to Burnley’s disastrous start to the season, which sees them sit inside the Championship’s bottom three with just one win from their first 11 games.
The defeat to Wolves, meanwhile, saw their winless home league run stretch to over a calendar year.
Stewarts quickly rushed over to the supporter in a bid to take down the banner, which led to a confrontation in the stand.
Officers from Lancashire Police soon became involved in a bid to diffuse the situation, but later tracked down the supporter in question on Harry Potts Way after he opted to leave the stadium.
The Burnley Express contacted Lancashire Police to clarify their involvement in the confrontation, following reports they were also involved in the seizure of the banner.
But the force confirmed this was not the case.
“Lancashire Police weren’t involved in seizing the flag,” a spokesperson said.
“Our officers inside the stadium responded to the crowd reaction when the flag was seized, they went over to check on the steward. We were there from a public safety point of view.
“Officers did speak outside of the stadium to the person with the flag because of the altercation between him and the steward. No further action was taken.”
