Nicky Hayen on his uncertain Burnley future after failure to beat Derby County
Nicky Hayen responds to questions over his uncertain Burnley future
Nicky Hayen admits he doesn’t know what his future holds despite vowing to try and fight on as Burnley boss.
The Belgian is coming under growing pressure, just two months into his reign, having failed to win any of his first eight games in charge.
The Clarets looked set to end their miserable long wait for a victory against Derby County today, only to be painfully pegged back deep into stoppage-time during their 1-1 draw at Turf Moor.
It leaves Hayen’s side rooted to the bottom of the Championship table.
Hayen had put pressure on himself before the game by describing the fixture as “must-win”. Now that’s not happened, inevitably questions will be asked about what’s next.
Here’s everything he had to say about his uncertain future after today’s game:
Are you worried?
“If a manager in this situation is not worried, he's lying, so you just have to be honest.
“But there's a difference, not feeling confidence from the board anymore. Okay, we will have the conversation together and see what is the best option.
“But I told you, we need this window [international break] to change a lot of things and we wanted to do it with a victory.
“Unfortunately it's a draw, but we'll see what's best for the upcoming weeks.”
Do you want to continue?
“Yes, 100 per cent, because as I said before, we need this window.
“I said already weeks before, it's not from today, that if you see how players came in, Largie [Ramazani] for example, he was a starting player today, but because he has an injury, it was actually a risk even to put him on the bench. This is the situation we're in.
“We try to push the players and to push this situation as far, but there will be players coming back after the international break, we can have more depth in our squad, and if you really think that I don't want to put my best players in their best position…I really want to , but sometimes you have to be creative and think what is the best alternative for the players and I hope this can change after the international break.”
Are you still confident you can turn it around?
“Yes, because we saw a lot of positive things also in this training week, especially in the first half we did good things. But we have to continue also in the second half.
“Sometimes when you're in the lead you play with a certain fear and that's the mindset we have to change, because we're actually pushing for that second goal, but then you see also that we were dropping out or losing energy, and this is also an important thing that we have to continue for 95 minutes.”
You described today’s game as must-win, but you only drew, so what next?
“I don't know. I said also last week we have to ask this question to other people, but I speak a lot with the people, so it's not that we have this conversation that is just planned after the game.
“No, we always do a recap of the game and have feedback and always have an honest conversation, so I don't know what's going to happen.”
What do you expect from those talks?
“I don't know. Again, I'm not busy every day with the result, if I'm out or not, and I said I know the fans are a lot disappointed, I understand it also myself.
“No, we didn't have the start also, we had a really bad start and this is also not what I expected.
“But like I said, I'm always resilient, I'm always a fighter. Tomorrow I come back with a new positive energy.
“That's always how I've worked and that's the energy I want to bring towards the players and this club.”
Do you expect to still be in charge after the international break?
“Like I said, I don't know. I really hope so, because I really work really hard for this club.
“I want to give the patience back to the fans and I really understand how disappointed they are and that they even blame me. I don't have a problem with it.
“But at this moment I still feel that we can give back a lot, because I think also Josh Cullen mentioned it, a few wins in a row can make a huge difference, and today could be the first win and a really important start.
“But we didn't, even if we were close, and then we have to do it after the international break.”
