Nicky Hayen makes Burnley free agent admission after transfer window closure
More ins and outs on the cards despite transfer window closure
Nicky Hayen says there’s still more work to be done - both in and out of Turf Moor - despite the recent closure of the summer transfer window.
It was a busy deadline day for Burnley, with Joe Worrall and Zian Flemming departing while Igor Julio, Reo Hatate and Largie Ramazani all signing on the dotted line.
But the Clarets will now start work on scouring the free agent market, while further departures are required to trim down Burnley’s bloated squad.
A new number nine could be high on the priority list after Burnley failed to replace Zian Flemming on deadline day.
When asked if Burnley’s transfer business is now done until January, Hayen said: “No, we're still looking for free agents.
“There's still some markets open for players to leave as well, so we'll see what's the best solution in the upcoming days.”
It comes after Lyle Foster completed a move to MLS side Houston Dynamo on the final day of the American transfer window.
The likes of Shurandy Sambo and Michael Obafemi, two players on the fringes of the Burnley squad, could also be allowed to depart.
Following the closure of the summer transfer window, Burnley are now required to submit their official 25-man squad list to the EFL.
It’s understood the Clarets are expected to name an initial squad of around 21 or 22 players for Saturday’s game against Bristol City.
The final remaining spots will then be filled once Burnley have finalised their business, whether that’s with the arrival of a free agent or with those players that haven’t left.
Despite returning to Turf Moor on a one-year deal earlier this summer, Ashley Barnes is not expected to make the final cut.
The EFL must publish all squad lists within seven days of the window closing, but they’re not expected to be announced until early next week.
