Kyle Walker on Burnley struggles, Wolves mistake and Jamie Vardy

Kyle Walker discusses Burnley’s struggles and his error against Wolves

Kyle Walker says he takes full “accountability” for his error during Burnley’s defeat to Wolves last week.

The defender was culpable for Wolves’ equaliser, giving up possession just outside his own box as he attempted to cut inside rather than clear his lines.

It proved to be the first of two inexplicable Burnley mistakes that led to Wolves goals, with Igor Julio - and, to a lesser extent, Gregoire Coudert - at fault.

Walker acknowledged the errors while appearing on talkSPORT on Wednesday, where he also discussed Burnley’s poor start to the season, the influence of Jamie Vardy and how his body is holding up at the age of 36.

Here’s what he had to say:

Wolves

“I have to hold my hands up and say the first goal, it’s my fault when I tried to cut inside. I take accountability for it.

“I think I’ve been very vocal with the lads that we need to take accountability. We’ve not won at the Turf for a year now, which is ridiculous.

“We know as a team and as a group of men that we need to do better. We’ve had 21 games, 11 draws and 10 defeats. It’s not good enough, especially at home.

“It’s pressure. When you’re playing against good teams and in front of your own fans, you want to win. We want a victory for them.

“Obviously we got a good victory at Watford and you’re thinking: ‘okay, we’re starting to turn a corner now’, but then we went and conceded late on against Charlton and then it was individual mistakes [against Wolves].

“Me and Igor are both experienced players, so we need to take that on the chin. But we’ve got an important game on Saturday against Lincoln and hopefully we can put it right there.”

Jamie Vardy

“He’s good and he can be vital for us.

“We both try and help the dressing room. You also look at the likes of Ashley Barnes, Josh Cullen is now coming back from injury which is a big boost to the team, but it’s a great club.

“I actually can’t speak highly enough of it, so I just wish we were in a better position so when I come in to do things like this it’s a little bit easier for me to talk about Burnley.

“Matt Williams, who does all the transfers, he came in and said: ‘I think we’ve got Vardy’, so when you get a player like that you know where the club wants to go.

“But we need to back it up with results now, it’s as simple as that.”

Aches and pains

“It’s the Achilles at the minute, they’re not great. It’s probably just the wear and tear of football.

“I sleep completely fine, but after a game is a struggle. But what I’ve found now, is that when I play now, the morning afterwards is like a hangover feeling. The tiredness I have…I never used to get that. It’s old age.

“I hate stretching, I can’t stretch. It’s impossible. Anyone that knows me or anyone that has played with me will know I’m the stiffest player in football. I don’t believe in stretching.”
