How Burnley lined up the last time they faced Lincoln City at Sincil Bank
Burnley make a rare trip to Sincil Bank this weekend, their first in 27 years when they take on Lincoln City.
Aside from that infamous FA Cup tie in 2017, the two sides haven’t done battle since January 30, 1999.
Brian Reid scored Burnley’s goal on that afternoon as the two sides played out a 1-1 draw in Lincolnshire, levelling in the second-half after Gavin Gordon’s first-half opener for the Imps.
It was the second 1-1 draw the two sides had played out in as many months, having recorded the same scoreline at Turf Moor in December.
The Clarets finished in 15th place in the old Second Division that season under the management of Stan Ternent.
But what about the side that took to the pitch that day? We take a closer look:
Paul Crichton
After a brief loan spell from West Brom, Crichton would later sign permanently for a fee of £100,000. Just a month after this fixture, Crichton would concede 11 goals in the space of just two games, following 5-0 and 6-0 defeats to Gillingham and Manchester City respectively.
Steve Davis
The centre-back made 327 appearances for the Clarets over two spells. He was in his second stint with the club at this point, having returned from Luton Town in 1998 for a fee of £800,000, and would go on to lead the club to promotion the following season. The club captain would remain at Turf Moor until 2003, where he joined Blackpool.
Neil Moore
The Liverpudlian spent two seasons with the Clarets after joining from Norwich City in 1997. The defender would make 14 appearances for Ternent’s side that season, but his season was cut short in March 1999 after suffering a leg injury during a game against Manchester City.
Brian Reid
Burnley’s goalscorer on the day, Reid spent just the one season at Turf Moor, scoring three times in 33 appearances. The Scot would return north of the border at the end of the season to sign for Dunfermline Athletic. His post-playing career saw him coach in countries such as Cyprus and the Philippines.
Steve Morgan
Morgan is another one that spent just one season with the Clarets, making 20 appearances in league and cup. The defender, who signed from Wigan Athletic, departed after just a year to join Hull City. He had previously racked up hundreds of appearances for the likes of Blackpool and Plymouth Argyle.
Gordon Armstrong
A £40,000 summer signing from Bury, Armstrong would end up staying at Turf Moor for five years. The former Sunderland midfielder made 113 appearances for the Clarets, scoring five times, before leaving to join Accrington Stanley in 2003.
Micky Mellon
The midfielder had only just signed for the Clarets for a £350,000 fee from Tranmere Rovers earlier that month. The Scot would go on to remain in East Lancashire for two seasons, scoring five times in 80 games.
Graham Branch
Like Mellon, Branch was also a January signing for the Clarets, arriving from Stockport County on a free transfer. The left-sided player would remain at Turf Moor until 2007, making 344 appearances in total and scoring 26 times.
Glen Little
The Clarets favourite made 37 appearances that season from the wing, scoring five times. A 1997 signing from Glentoran, Little would end up staying with Burnley until being snapped up by Reading in 2004, having made 283 appearances for the club, scoring 36 times.
Andy Cooke
A 1995 signing, Cooke would spend five years with the Clarets, scoring 61 times in 203 appearances. He reached double figures during the 1998/99 season, finding the back of the net on 10 occasions. The forward left to join Stoke City, the club he supported, in 2000 for a £300,000 fee.
Andy Payton
Payts scored 23 times that season to finish the campaign as Burnley’s top goalscorer. A 1998 signing from Huddersfield Town, the striker would spend five years at Turf Moor, scoring 81 goals in 176 games, before eventually ending his career in non-league with the likes of Colne.
