Cardiff City boss hails 'special' comeback against hapless Burnley

Brian Barry-Murphy hails Cardiff’s ‘special’ comeback against Burnley

Brian Barry-Murphy insists he always believed his Cardiff City side could beat Burnley - even at 4-1 down.

While Burnley boss Fabio Celestini will be left questioning his players’ mentality, Barry-Murphy had nothing but praise his charges.

“I think it's a very memorable day because of the scoreline,” he said.

“Obviously, with the players putting everything into the game and even at 4-1 down, we felt as if we could be dangerous if we could get the next goal - but we understood the consequences if we didn't. But, it ends up being a very special day for us.

“I think at this moment, that's why I'm very grateful for the players' mentality and the attitude to keep going for it.

"We were backed by an incredible stadium today. It was difficult for everybody at 4-1, but once we got that second goal, you could feel the energy from the stands and that was reciprocated on the pitch and the players poured forward.

"Every time we attacked their goal, we looked as if we could score, and every time they broke on us, they looked as if they could score. But I'd rather have it that way, because I think it's in line with the mentality of our support in the club to keep going for it.”

Barry-Murphy added: “When you see players want to play for the team so much, it's almost a throwback to days gone by. Even today, I know it was hard when we were losing, but I felt as if I was very lucky to be in the presence of players want to play for the club so much.

“I think it's indicative of where we are as a club. We have a very small squad that's stretched to a very extreme degree, but we have a lot of attacking players who are so young and so open to improvement.

"As long as you have that mentality, that belief in yourself and in your team's game, then anything's possible."
