Burnley v Middlesbrough: Team news, predicted teams and TV details

Everything you need to know ahead of Burnley v Middlesbrough

Burnley will be looking for a reaction - but more significantly, a win - when they return to Turf Moor tonight to face Middlesbrough.

It’s now been over 200 days since the last time the Clarets won a game of any kind in 90 minutes.

That dismal streak continued at the weekend with that 4-1 horror show at Norwich City, which saw Nicky Hayen’s side slip into the Championship’s bottom three.

It’s been even more tough going at Turf Moor, where Burnley are without a league win since last October.

They face a Boro side that sit fifth following a good start to the campaign, beating West Brom 3-1 at the weekend.

Here’s all the important information ahead of tonight’s fixture:

When and where is the game taking place?

The match is being held at Burnley’s Turf Moor stadium on Wednesday, September 2. Kick off is at 8pm.

Is it on TV?

Yes, the game will be televised live on Sky Sports. Coverage begins at 7.30pm.

How else can I follow the game?

Burnley FC writer Matt Scrafton will be providing live updates on his X feed, followed by a match report, post-match reaction and further analysis on the Burnley Express’ website.

What’s the latest team news?

Humphreys faces eight weeks out with a knee injury, while Pires continues to serve concussion protocol following his accidental clash of heads at Bradford.

Oliver Sonne, though, could be back involved after missing the weekend trip to Norwich with a minor knee problem.

Josh Laurent, meanwhile, services his one-match suspension following his red card for two bookable offences against Norwich.

Jordan Beyer, Josh Cullen, Enock Agyei, Jaydon Banel and Ashley Barnes all remain sidelined.

It’s not been confirmed either way, as of yet, if deadline day signings Igor Julio, Reo Hatate and Largie Ramazani were registered in time to feature tonight.

As for Boro, former Burnley loanee Jeremy Sarmiento is a doubt after being brought off at the weekend, while Tommy Conway is available but continues to work his way back to full fitness following two summer surgeries.

Nicky Hayen’s pre-match comments

“It's a really good team where a lot of players are still there [from last season’s run to the play-off final], so they keep on repeating the same things.

“We know it's a really competitive team again for the play-offs or automatic promotion positions and we just have to be aware that it's a strong team.

“But what we delivered against West Ham, this is the thing that we have to believe, especially at our home.

“Again, we will need the fans also because you saw that when we are connected that we're really strong.

“Unfortunately we had two away games and three with a cup game, so it would be better when there was another home game. But okay, we have now two [back to back] and we're going to make the best out of it.”

What are the predicted teams?

Burnley: Weiss, Walker, Ahmedhodzic, Alleyne, Roberts, Raghouber, Hannibal, Ramsey, Satpayev, Bruun Larsen, Broja

Boro: Vitek, Brittain, Ayling, Jones, Borges; Malanda, Morris, Berhalter; Arfsten, Joseph, Lankshear

Who is the referee?

Matt Donohue. He’s officiated two games so far this season, dishing out nine yellow cards but no reds. It will be the first Burnley game he’s taken charge of since April 2025, when he sent off two Watford players during a crucial 2-1 win at Vicarage Road. Bobby Madley is fourth official.

What are the latest odds?

Burnley: 17/10

Draw: 23/10

Boro: 6/4
