Burnley five-year net spend compared to Premier League rivals
How does Burnley's net spend over the last five years compare to the rest of the Premier League?
Burnley embarked on a major spending spree in the summer after sealing their return to the Premier League.
The Clarets parted with no less than €128.65m (£112.70m) to bring 14 players to Turf Moor as they prepared for life back in the top flight. Scott Parker’s men were a defensive machine in the Championship, but had to prepare for a completely different ball game in the Premier League at both ends of the pitch. The likes of Lesley Ugochukwu, Armando Broja, Loum Tchaouna and Quilindschy Hartman were all signed for major fees, while veterans Kyle Walker and Martin Dubravka also arrived on more favourable terms.
The sale of James Trafford to Manchester City helped fund this outlay, but how has all that affected Burnley’s five-year net spend, and how do they compare to the rest of the Premier League?

Burnley’s spending has fluctuated in recent years, with post-relegation fire sales followed by Premier League return shopping sprees. Burnley spent €93.65m net this summer, according to Transfermarkt, which is actually almost €14m less than they spent the last time they achieved promotion. Nevertheless, it brings their five-year net spend to €123.28m, which is above high-performing Premier League sides like Aston Villa, Bournemouth, Brentford and Brighton. The latter are actually the only side to have made a small profit during this period, fuelled by the huge sales of Alexis Mac Allister, Moises Caicedo, Joao Pedro and more.

There are zero surprises regarding who occupies the top spots in this particular table. However, the level of spending enjoyed by the likes of Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur feels particularly egregious given their lack of success during this period - the latter finishing 17th last season and currently sitting 14th. Despite sitting 19th in the table and 10 points from safety, Burnley are yet to make any signings this January.
