Burnley boss addresses Max Weiss' position as number one after howler
Nicky Hayen addresses Max Weiss’ position as number one
Burnley will analyse Max Weiss’ position as number one goalkeeper following his high-profile gaffe.
The 22-year-old gifted Swansea City their opening goal during Saturday’s 3-1 defeat as the Clarets continued their nightmare start to the season.
Weiss saw his attempted clearance charged down by Adam Idah, who subsequently had the simple task of slotting home into the back of his empty net.
It continues an unconvincing start to the season for the German, who has shipped 16 goals in just seven games.
It’s prompted calls from some Burnley fans to see a change of goalkeeper in between the sticks, with Frenchman Gregoire Coudert waiting in the wings.
When asked if dropping Weiss is a consideration, Hayen replied: “This is an analysis that we will make this week. We always make an analysis.
“I think you didn't see a team that was down today on the pitch, especially in the first half, but also in the second half when we came out.
“We came out with a good energy and I think except for the Norwich game we came out quite well [after half time].
“We also had momentum in the game when we came back with a 2-1. You felt we could have momentum, but you always give it away. That's also something that we have to change.”
Weiss’ error wasn’t the only glaring mistake Burnley made against Swansea on Saturday, with Ugo Raghouber also culpable.
The midfielder’s blind pass was quickly pounced upon by the home side as they broke away to make it 2-0.
When asked if he had any explanation for the gaffes, Hayen added: “Individual mistakes. Decision-making, I think that's the case.
“I think Max could just clear the ball, [he] wanted to wait too long, get blocked and then he gives a lateral ball without looking if there is someone in his back.
“It is with decision-making, that's for sure. It's not on purpose, but unfortunately it happens to us in a really bad or difficult situation.”
