Fabio Celestini explains Pires withdrawal and Ahmedhodzic absence
Lucas Pires’ withdrawal against Cardiff City was down to a knock, Burnley boss Fabio Celestini has confirmed.
Many Clarets fans were left bewildered when the left-back was brought off and replaced by Connor Roberts in the 65th minute.
At the time, Burnley were leading 4-1 in the game, yet somehow conspired to concede four goals in 29 minutes to lose 5-4.
Pires’ substitution was part of a double change, which also saw Oliver Sonne replace winger Jaydon Banel.
When asked if Pires suffered a significant injury, Celestini explained: “No, he was just feeling every time more.
“He said with [Burnley leading] 4-1, maybe I don't take risks. It was more like that, I don't think it's a big injury.”
Jamie Vardy, meanwhile, was dropped to the bench as Burnley made one change to the side that drew 1-1 with QPR in midweek.
Celestini didn’t bring on the experienced striker, with the Clarets boss opting to instead bring on Zeki Amdouni on his return from an ankle injury.
“Jamie was okay, but I decided to have three players very quick,” he explained.
“Because we know we can attack the deep, very good against Cardiff, we play extremely well and that's worked for 70 minutes.
“After I decided to give 15 minutes to Zeki to try to control more the ball, to try to control the ball and have more of the ball.
“But in the end, I see we can set crosses, because we must defend with the ball and Zeki can't hold the ball, it can be very dangerous. If maybe [Aaron] Ramsey passes the ball to Zeki, we can score the 5-4. That's the reason.”
Celestini also revealed Anel Ahmedhodzic was absent from Burnley’s squad as a result of sickness.
Ben Amos, Jordan Beyer, Bashir Humphreys, Shurandy Sambo, Hannibal, Jacob Bruun Larsen, Dastan Satpayev, Mike Tresor, Ashley Barnes, Armando Broja and Michael Obafemi were all injured or unavailable.
