Burnley man completes deadline day move to fellow Championship side

Joe Worrall completes deadline day move to Wrexham

Joe Worrall has departed Burnley on transfer deadline day to join fellow Championship side Wrexham.

The 29-year-old makes the move for a reported £2m fee, ending his two-year stay at Turf Moor.

The centre-back has signed a two-year deal at the Racecourse Ground, with the option of a further 12 months.

“I’m really pleased to be here,” Worrall said of his move. “I’m super excited to get my teeth into working with good players, the manager and the ownership.

“I’m here to win football matches and achieve something special.

“Everything that Wrexham’s about, I'm going to throw myself into it head-first and give my all for this badge.”

Despite starting the season opener against Notts County in the Carabao Cup, Worrall didn’t feature in any of Burnley’s first three Championship games this season.

He found himself falling down the pecking order of Nicky Hayen’s centre back options following the recent arrivals of Max Alleyne and Anel Ahmedhodzic.

It’s understood Hayen was a fan of Worrall and would have liked to have kept him around, but was unable to guarantee him regular minutes at Turf Moor this term. The Clarets must also trim down their bloated squad if they’re to strengthen their squad further ahead of tonight’s 11pm deadline.

Worrall made the move to East Lancashire in the summer of 2024 but struggled to nail down a regular starting spot.

He began the 2024/25 campaign alongside Maxime Esteve, but was usurped by CJ Egan-Riley for the remainder of the season after missing a run of games through injury.

The defender made 13 appearances that season and racked up the same number of games the following season in league and cup as Burnley were relegated from the Premier League.
