Burnley are the best behaved in the Premier League, according to red card statistics

Burnley are the most disciplined club of the current 20 Premier League sides, with only 0.230 red cards per match.

According to research from Paddy Power www.paddypower.com/football/english-premier-league, the Clarets’ seven Premier League red cards, from 238 games, is the best record of the teams in the top flight this season.

Burnley collected two in 2009/10, through Steven Caldwell and Stephen Jordan, and another two in 2014/15, for Michael Duff and Ashley Barnes.

In 2016/17, Barnes and Jeff Hendrick were dismissed, but Robbie Brady’s red card at Huddersfield in January 2019 is Burnley’s last sending off – a run of 74 games.

Barnsley’s brief spell in the Premier League has seen The Tykes named as the dirtiest team in the history of England’s top flight, while Cardiff City are the angels of the division, according to new research.

Paddy Power’s study revealed that, with five red cards in 38 games in the 1997/98 season, Barnsley’s 0.132 red cards per game is higher than any club to ever play in the Premier League.

Hull City picked up 24 dismissals across 190 top-flight fixtures (0.126 reds per game), while Newcastle United are the dirtiest current Premier League club (0.090).

With just 0.026 red cards per match, Cardiff City were the beacon of good behaviour in two seasons in the top division.

The Clarets have shown they play hard, but fair, within the rules, but their haul of 1.710 yellow cards per game is one of the worst records for bookings in Premier League history.

No side has picked up more yellow cards per match than Derby County though, with an average of almost two bookings in each of their 266 fixtures (1.962).

Three current Premier League sides are included in the list of most-cautioned clubs, with Wolves (1.686) and West Ham (1.667) joining Burnley in the top 10 for yellow cards per game.

Long-time top flight absentees Oldham Athletic and Swindon Town received the fewest bookings per game (0.821 and 0.905 respectively).

Liverpool’s 1,341 yellows in 1,087 matches is the sixth-best record in history, and better than any other current Premier League club.

A spokesman for Paddy Power said: “José Mourinho might bang on about the need to play nasty in order to win things, but being the dirtiest clubs in Premier League history hasn’t seemed to help sides like Barnsley and Hull avoid relegation.

“Derby County hold the record for the lowest points tally, and they’re also the most-booked team to ever play in the division.”
