Finals day produces some thrilling tennis

Burnley Tennis Club hosted their annual Club Finals day recently, which also doubled up as a Great British Tennis Weekend open day.

The day started at 10 a.m., with a number of junior tennis competitions for mini red, green, orange and yellow ball.

The competitions were very well attended, with winners and runners-up collecting prizes.

Mini red winner was Thomas Smith, with Adam Karoacki runner-up, mini orange winner was Amelia Halstead, beating Lucas Von Heuser Mason, Ethan Little was mini green winner, with Tyler Stechling runner-up, and yellow Under 16 winner was Ellis Harling, ahead of Ethan Bulcock.

The club’s adult finals produced some fantastic tennis, with the ladies’ singles title going to Elaine Varcoe for the fifth year running, after beating Tiffany Deaville in the final.

The men’s final was won by Mark Rushton Woods,who beat Scott Northey in an entertaining encounter.

The men’s doubles was won by reigning East Lancashire men’s doubles champions Mark Rushton Woods and Chris Rowell, who beat Scott Northey and Marley Byrne, while the ladies doubles was won by Elaine Varcoe and Susan Brown, who came through a tough match against Jo Heywood and Jill Little

The final two finals of the day saw James Stansfield beating Tom Maullin in three sets to win the open singles final, before, in the mixed doubles, Scott Northey, in his third final, teamed up with Christine Holt to beat top seeds Elaine Varcoe – also in her third final – and partner Mick Harris to lift the trophy.

The results of the finals of the Over 40s’ singles and Over 40s’ doubles will appear at a later date.

Paul Barlow took on Ian Woolstencroft in the singles final, with Barlow and David Whittaker teaming up to take on Simon Goodwill and Paul Tyhurst in the doubles final.

The club will be holding another two open days, with the next one on Saturday, May 14th from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
