“Money” out of equation!

Luke Blackledge has praised the World Boxing Organisation’s move to strip Floyd Mayweather of the welterweight strap that he took from Filipino Manny Pacquiao.

The 38-year-old pound-for-pound king earned a unanimous verdict over the former WBO champion at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas in May.

But failure to adhere to certain regulations - more specifically sanctioning fees and owning belts in more than one division - ultimately cost Mayweather dearly.

The five-weight world champion holds WBC and WBA titles at 147lb, but it was his super-welterweight belts that he owned with the aforementioned sanctioning bodies that had become the cause of such controversy.

Mayweather was also given a deadline to make a payment of $200,000, just 0.1 percent of his Pacquiao purse, which he failed to meet.

“There’s some standing up to these individuals but others don’t,” said Blackledge. “Fair play to the WBO because they’ve acted on it pretty quickly to strip Mayweather. He was given the ultimatum, didn’t act and has been penalised.

“It’s good that they’re standing up to the big names and setting an example. More need to follow suit now. They need to stop letting fighters dictate.

“There’s young prospects out there being denied the opportunity to fight for these titles because somebody else is hanging on to them.”

As the interim title holder, following his triumph over Jessie Vargas, Timothy Bradley has been elevated to full belt-holder.

Mayweather now has 14 days to appeal the verdict.
