All to play for in indoor bowling league

As the new year begins, it’s all to play for in the Dorothy Southworth Indoor bowling league at the Roefield Leisure Centre, Clitheroe.

December was a disastrous month for reigning champions Waddington Red, who had opened up a very useful lead at the top of the league, only to lose three of their last four games, resulting in a situation where four teams are now in serious contention to lift the title.

As the halfway point of the season is reached, new team The Tigers, on 55 points, now lead the table, but only on shot difference from Waddington Red, also on 55, with Sabden a single point behind, and another new team, The All Blacks, a further three points adrift.

In the games played over the Christmas period, there were maximum victories for Tigers (twice), Clitheroe Blue, All Blacks, Longridge and Read, while Hurst Green had a close game with Clitheroe White, before getting home by just four shots and taking the additional points for the aggregate after sharing the mats at 1-1.

The biggest surprise, however, was Clitheroe Blue’s 4-2 points victory over high flying Waddington Red, and the result could have been even worse for the Reds as, on mat one, Waddington’s Ken Barker, Jack Arthur and skipper Bill Rome left it until the final end before squeaking home by 18-17 over Clitheroe’s Carol Sutcliffe and Olga and Ray Black.

The story on mat two was a much different affair, with Clitheroe Blue’s trio of Pat and Dave Bonney and skipper Bob Warburton proving too strong for the Red’s Kevin Ryder, John Hammond and George Rushton, running out comfortable 31-6 winners and so securing the aggregate by 48-24 and an unexpected 4-2 points victory.

Results: Hurst Green 0, Tigers 6 57-20 (24-14, 33-6); Clitheroe Blue 6, Clitheroe White 0 53-16 (28-7, 25-9); All Blacks 6, Sabden 0 39-32 (18-15, 21-17); Longridge 6, French Connection 0 41-21 (18-13, 23-8); West Bradford 0, Read 6 24-41 (13-21, 11-20); Tigers 6, Waddington Blue 0 56-22 (27-7, 29-15); Waddington Red 2, Clitheroe Blue 4 24-48 (18-17, 6-31); Clitheroe White 2, Hurst Green 4 34-38 (12-21, 22-17).
