Mr Miliband spoke to a Muni Theatre audience in Colne packed with supporters of Labour’s candidates in Pendle and Burnley, Azhar Ali and Julie Cooper.

He spoke of the main thrusts of Labour’s campaign in recent months – the NHS, tax avoidance, the bedroom tax, tuition fees, raising the minimum wage and abolishing zero hours contracts – and praised the efforts of party supporters for the number of leaflets delivered, phone calls made and doors knocked on to persuade floating voters to join Labour’s cause.

He promised a Labour government would introduce 36,000 more doctors, nurses, midwives and carers and said the Tories would, by contrast, make cuts to the NHS.

And he said: “People have a choice tomorrow – five more years of Tory cuts or a Labour Government that will put working people first.”
