The lounges were awash with the traditional red and white flags and bunting. A host of activities for the English national day included the history and legends of St George being read out and quizzes about England’s foods and traditions.

A spokesman said: "Great fun was had by all with the residents wearing St George’s hats and glasses. The activity team had made a brilliant display with an English theme for the joyous occasion. The day also coincided with Shakespeare’s birthday so various famous sonnets were quoted. Later in the day, the residents planted their sunflower seedlings for their tallest flower competition later in the year. Everyone agreed it had been an enjoyable day."
