Cynical reason behind allowances cut?

Coun. Joe Cooney, Tory leader of the local authority, announced he is to take a 20% cut in the allowance paid to him.

Is this a truly philanthropic gesture by the powerful Executive member?

Or is it merely a handy coincidence that elections, both local and national, just happen to be in the offing?

You don’t have to be cynical to suggest many people may offer option two as the more likely.

One now wonders how many - if any - of the council’s Executive will now play follow-my-leader on the allowance question.
